With over 50 years of experience in the construction industry both locally and internationally, Eng. Karunaratne is one of the most experienced figures in the local industry. He has served as the Managing Director of Stems Consultants following the demise of founder Dr. B.M.A. Balasuriya in 1990.

He is a Past President of the Society of Structural Engineers Sri Lanka and has sat on committees and panels on a voluntary basis for organizations such as CIDA, NBRO and SLSI.

His services to the local construction industry saw him being awarded an Award of Eminence for lifetime contributions to the industry and engineering profession in November 2014 by CIDA.
